PSP UMD Movies: Deeper Issues Are At Play
Ever since the PlayStation Portable (PSP) was launched, individuals have been interested in much more than the games that could be played on it. There was also a lot of demand for the PSP UMD movies that it could play. Think about it - there are likely more movies on the market in this format than there are other PSP stuff like the actual games. And the spin-off has been software programs that can convert movies into a format that's playable on these systems, such as PSP Movie Creator.
But before long, folks largely stopped buying the PSP UMD movies. This drop in sales prompted the producers of these disks to shrink their stock or even stop making them, as well as selling them at bargain prices. The problem, however, wasn't that people weren't watching the movies, it's just that they were finding another supply of them. What's occurring is that folks started downloading their PSP movies from the internet, just like they download other audio and video files. Why pay good money for something that is freely available online?
Sadly for the PSP UMD movie manufacturers, they seem to have overlooked this somewhat critical aspect of producing digital products. Of course it's just like what happened to the producers of music CDs when the internet became filled with lots of free download sites. There are now so many sites where you can get pirated copies of PSP UMD movies that it has impacted the manufacture of the physical product.
Some manufacturers have created promotional items such as older videos that were previously available only in obsolete formats such as beta, and offered them at a reduced price. Some companies resorted to creating websites where movies can be viewed by streaming for a small price. However there are still many people who will find a way to make the movies freely available.
There is no shortage of sites online where a movie can be converted to PSP format and downloaded. Along with this internet access to free movies, you can also purchase software that will convert your files to UMD format. Undoubtedly this is against the law, however most individuals don't really care. Then they can upload their converted file and distribute it to anyone else who's interested. When you have these sorts of choices, there does not seem to be any reason to buy something that you can get at no cost.
So how do you solve the problem? Maybe there needs to be an organization that monitors these illegal downloads. This could be something that the big manufacturers would like to be involved in. In addition, a crackdown on those who break the copyright laws must be pursued more vigorously. But unquestionably, all of this is much easier said than done, so for those of us who enjoy watching a PSP UMD movie, we can help the industry by paying for them rather than watching them at no cost.
